Deborah A. "Debbie" Gownley

Deborah A. “Debbie” Gownley, 70 of 173 Tiffany Lane, Mt. Carmel passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at her home with her family by her side.

Born in Ashland on December 19, 1952, she was the daughter of the late John J. “Sop” and Margaret “Midge” (McAndrew) May.

Born and raised in Centralia, she attended the former St. Ignatius grade school.  She was a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School and Bloomsburg State College.

On October 22, 1988 in St. Ignatius Church in Centralia she married Ted Gownley who survives.

Debbie was an elementary school teacher at Mt. Carmel Elementary for many years before her retirement.

Debbie was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, longtime deanery and parish secretary for the Council of Catholic Women and former school board member at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional High School.

She was a life-long Philadelphia Phillies fan and appeared twice as a contestant on the game show Jeopardy.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mary Gownley and her husband Tom Peeler of Conshohocken; a son, Joe Gownley and his wife Christina of Jessup; two brothers, John “Jack” May and his wife Marilyn of Reading and Richard “Rick” May and his wife Annie of Lititz; nieces and nephews.

Debbie loved her cats “Coco” and “Lulu” and her dog “Buddy”.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church with the Very Rev. Francis J. Karwacki, Pastor as the celebrant.  Interment will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Centralia.  A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 8:30 until 9:45 a.m. at the Joseph J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home, 40 South Market Street, Mt. Carmel, Joseph J.
