ELYSBURG — John (Krynistky) Kent, 91, of Hillcrest Drive, returned to his heavenly home Feb. 19, 2016, after a valiant battle with cancer. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. John was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Centralia to the late Mary Pitorak and Nicholas Krynitsky. John served in four branches of the military throughout his 13-year career. At age 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. After the war ended, he became a coal miner in Centralia for several years, but the military was still important to him and he joined the Merchant Marines as a boatswain's mate. During his time in the Merchant Marines he traveled between the United States and Europe. When his tour of duty was completed, John reenlisted with the U.S. Army Air Force where he served as a military policeman until the Air Force became its own division of the military. At this time he transferred to the U.S. Air Force and served as an air policeman until the end of his military career. After serving his country, John came home to join his three brothers in the garment business they had started. John worked for Lady Hope Dress Inc. for 26 years until he retired in 1989. In addition to Lady Hope, John and his brothers owned Carmel TV during the 1960s and 1970s. John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his annual Canadian fishing trips with his family and friends. He often visited the VFW and fire companies to "play the pools" and loved spending time with his relatives, of which he had many. He was a member of Saint Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Mount Carmel. John is survived by his brothers, Nicholas Kent, Stephen Kent, Peter Krynitsky and George Krynitsky, and a sister, Helen Whyne. In addition to his siblings, he is survived by an extensive number of nieces and nephews, including his number one; as well as great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
