Joseph Dominic Chimel,71, died peacefully in his sleep on June 4, 2022.
He was born at Geisinger Medical Center on March 9, 1951, the eldest child of the late Adeline A. Profit and Daniel A. Chimel.
Joseph graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 1969. Shortly after graduation he hitched hiked out to California where he worked in construction and came of age during an era of incredible social upheaval and self-discovery. He returned home to Atlas, rolling into town in a van with a peace symbol on the mirror, American Flag curtains and a poster of Easy Rider on the inside roof of the van. We thought he was so cool! And he was! Joe was a real trendsetter and rebel in his time.
Professionally, Joe was always involved in building and construction. He especially liked doing site worked that was the foundation of numerous large housing developments. Those projects were a source of great pride for Joe. He held supervisory and managerial positions throughout his career.
During his lifetime, he went on annual camping trips to Assateague Island. At first, he went with friend and his siblings and now this trip has grown into an annual Chimel family tradition. One of Joe’s favorite things to do was four wheel on the beach.
In retirement, Joseph had many passions. His favorite hobby was his vegetable garden. He had a green thumb and was always sharing his tomatoes and peppers with friends and family. He was also and avid lover of nature and wildlife of all kinds.
Joe was fun to be around. He loved sitting around a kitchen table talking ‘till all hours of the morning. And he especially loved spending time with his nieces and nephews at family events.
Joseph is survived by his siblings, David Chimel and his wife Karen, Virginia Chimel and her husband Michael Koshinskie, Rita and her husband Peter Sherman and Daniel Chimel and his wife Dale and his nieces and nephews, Melissa, Adeline, Grace, Lorenzo, Sarah, Sam and Monica.
Religious services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 10:45 am at Joseph J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home, 40 South Market Street, Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz, III Supervisor. Rev. Francis J. Karwacki will officiate. Interment will follow in Saint Peter’s Cemetery, Mount Carmel Township. A visitation will be held on Saturday morning from 9:00 am until 10:45 am at the funeral home.
