Joseph Maczka

Joseph Maczka, 97 a resident of Serenity Gardens formerly of Centralia and Aristes passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at his residence.

Born in Centralia on September 2, 1924, he was the son of the late Joseph and Sophie (Ignarski) Maczka.

He graduated from Hubert Eicher High School in Centralia.

Joseph was decorated World War II Veteran. He served in the United States Army Airforce from 1942 until 1945. He was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He worked on the Norden bomb site and was an Airplane mechanic in the same squadron as Jimmy Stewart. Joseph participated in the Rhineland, Northern France, Ardennes, Normandy and Central Europe Air offensive campaigns. He received one silver star, two bronze stars and two purple hearts during the war.

He was married to Isabelle (Covas) Maczka who preceded him in death. They were married on July 12, 1946 in the former St. Ignatius Church in Centralia.

He was a master mechanic and following the war Joe moved to Queens, New York an opened up a Gulf service station which he owned and operated until his retirement.

Joseph was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish and was a life member of the Centralia American Legion Post #608.
He loved to work and kept himself busy with many projects during his retirement.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Matos and her husband Philip of Paradise Valley, AZ and Carol Ann Maczka and her husband Robert O’Connor of Cape Creek, AZ; two grandsons, Christian DeJong and Philip Matos; two great grandsons, Aidan and Lukas DeJong; two sisters, Stella Fago of Bloomsburg and Mary Macchia of New Jersey; one brother, Frank Maczka of Bloomsburg, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his sister, Josephine Matsko and his brother, John Matsko.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 18, 2022 at 12:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church with the Rev. Francis J. Karwacki, Pastor as celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:15 a.m. at the Joseph J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home, 40 South Market Street, Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz, III Supervisor. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy can be made to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, 47 South Market Street, Mt. Carmel, PA 17851.
