Lois Sarah Lomas, 86 of Turkey Run, Shenandoah passed away on Thursday morning, April 3, 2025 at the Shenandoah Senior Living Community after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Turkey Run on January 1, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Hobart D. Lomas Sr. and Mary Ondusko Lomas.
Earlier in life, she was employed as an operator for Bell Telephone in Philadelphia. She later worked as a secretary at the former Gene’s TV and Appliances, Shenandoah. She was also a waitress and bartender at the former Sacco’s Bar & Restaurant, Ringtown. Lois was also a manager at the Fashion Bug and was a sales associate at the Sears Department Store both in the former Schuylkill Mall, Frackville. Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the Shenandoah Area Free Public Library and the Shenandoah Borough Hall.
Lois was a faithful woman and was a devout member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Shenandoah until its closing. Her devotion continued with weekly services with Rev. Mindy Heppe at various locations including the Miner’s Memorial in Girard Park and even in her own home.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over fifty years. She held many offices and positions, her first was as Esther and her latest was as Sentinel and in between she was a five-time Worthy Matron. Lois currently held membership in the Orwigsburg Chapter No. 424.
Her family was of most importance to her. Throughout her life, she was a loving and devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Lois was an excellent cook and baker and loved preparing dishes and baked goods for her family and friends.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her two brothers, Hobart D. “Hobie” Lomas Jr. and his wife Theresa and George B. Lomas Sr. and his wife Mary Ann; two sisters, Esther Lomas Okarma and Mary Suzanne “Mary Sue” Buckanavage; and one nephew, George B. Lomas Jr.
Surviving are her daughter, Lynn M. Bova and her husband Michael of Newport News, Virginia; two grandsons, Mike Bova, Jr. of Virginia Beach and Curtis Bova of Newport News, Virginia; one great-granddaughter, Mia Bova; one brother-in-law, Joseph M. Buckanavage of Niantic, Connecticut; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Religious services will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 12:15 pm at the Oravitz Home for Funerals Inc., 40 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah with Rev. Mindy Heppe officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. The Order of Eastern Star Service will be held at 12:00 noon. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Saturday morning from 10:30 am until 12:00 noon at the funeral home.
